Tips for Properly Installing Interlocking Bricks

Interlocking bricks have transformed building technology to an extent that almost any type of building can be constructed with the same. The main design constraints are that the building plan should be rectangular and all wall dimensions and openings must be multiple of the width of the block type used.

The blocks must be laid dry around the entire building before placing the first course in a bed of normal bricks. This is done to ensure that they fit exactly next to each other (without any gaps) and that an exact number of full blocks are used, otherwise, the interlocking system will not function. Take care to align the blocks perfectly horizontally, and in a straight line, or at right angles at corners when laying the first course in the mortar bed. After the base course is properly hardened, the blocks are stacked dry, using a wooden or rubber hammer to knock the blocks gently into place. Up to 10 layers can be placed at a time.

Steps for installing interlocking bricks:

  1. Lay down a normal heavy basement.
  2. Place one layer of normal baked bricks on top of the basement in a mortar bed, with a width exactly matching the thickness of the proposed interlocking brick wall.
  3. Neatly place interlocking bricks over the bricklayer carefully.
  4. Ensure the edges of the roof project out a little more than the wall so that rainwater does not flow through the walls.
  5. Completely plaster the corners of the wall using cement so that adequate pressure is there from the sides of the building for the bricks to bond together from all four boundaries.
  6. There is no need to paint external walls but the gaps have to be filled with like-colored cement.
  7. Interlocking brick surface is relatively smooth hence before plastering the internal wall, the surface should be made rough.

Interlocking blocks are ideally suited for load-bearing wall constructions, even for two or more storey buildings where the height of the wall does not exceed 20 times its thickness. Contact us at toughie.in to know more on tips for properly installing interlocking bricks in Ernakulam.
