Meeting the need for adequate housing in India needs sustained investment and continued innovation. Appropriate technologies that lower the cost of construction and the cost to the environment are being investigated and implemented. It has been found through research, the use of traditional and conventional technologies in the construction and maintenance of buildings is inefficient and enormous amounts of resources are being consumed. To enable an efficient and cost-effective solution, a new concept of construction, innovative Toughie Interlocking Blocks in Kerala are being used now.

Factors that influence the use of soil interlocking bricks technology for construction:

  • Each block aligns with the next block with the help of a lock and key type design. Mortar-free construction can be achieved with interlock bricks which lower construction costs as compared to fired bricks.
  • Interlock bricks are suitable for a wide range of environments, and effectively reduce the impact on them.
  • Mortar-free construction can decrease the impact of earthquakes to a greater extent due to the relative movement of the interlocking blocks.
  • As there is no need for fire treatment of bricks, it reduces the fast depletion of the forest cover.
  • The interlock bricks are inexpensive and can be used without cement or mortar, easy to handle, mold and manufacture.
  • These bricks need less water for manufacturing and treatment compared with the production of other bricks.
  • As these bricks can be produced at or near the site, it leads to reduced transportation costs.
  • Interlocking bricks are not baked but made with mud pressed in a pressing machine and allowed to solidify by drying naturally. Hence zero carbon emissions!
  • The soil required for block production is usually locally available in most regions and this makes costs come down.
  • Even though skilled masons are not needed for interlock bricks’ construction, a certain amount of training is required to ensure that the walls are properly aligned and no gaps are left.
