Yes, interlocking bricks do require cement but in lesser quantities than traditional burnt clay bricks! Toughie Engineering the premier interlocking bricks manufacturer and supplier in Kerala produces Soil & cement interlocking bricks.

Soil interlocking blocks are manufactured by hydraulic compression of a mixture of laterite soil and ordinary Portland cement. Whereas, Cement Interlocking bricks are produced by compressing a mixture of crusher dust, Ordinary Portland Cement, 6 MM baby metal (aggregate), and water.

The materials are batched and mixed proportionately & then compressed using hydraulic technology to form bricks with desirable interlocking patterns. The bricks are then subjected to curing for about 7 days. After curing, the cement sets and bonds with other materials adding to the stability of the brick. Soil compression adds strength and density to the brick. The interlocking bricks are manufactured in different designs, finishes, and patterns.

Do interlocking bricks need mortar?

No. Interlocking bricks do not need cement to bind together like normal bricks. Each Interlocking brick is constructively designed to lock itself to the other bricks around without the use of mortar. The unique design fits the bricks together in a strong bond. A projection sticks out on one side of a brick, which can fit into a depression on the brick next to it. On the other side, it is the same as there is a depression designed to receive the projection of the brick on its other side.

Plastering is a time-consuming and expensive process in construction. Since Toughie interlocking bricks are self-designed with a neat finish, plastering of exterior & interior walls can be completely eliminated. Coarse or fine putty can be applied in the interiors or exteriors instead of plastering. For extra protection, the wall exterior can be painted. Cement is required only to fix the baseline of the bricks.

Interlock bricks may contain 10% Cement, and they can be made at a lower cost than conventional bricks. In fact, interlocking bricks cost nearly 35% lesser than conventional bricks. As we all know, Cement is becoming expensive and sand scarce, Toughie interlocking bricks come in as a great alternative to construction. Contact us to know more.
