Construction technologies are evolving at a fast pace. New technologies have replaced older one and one such latest advancement is interlocking bricks.

What are interlocking bricks? How are they useful for construction?

Let’s check out…

Interlocking bricks are the upgraded form of conventional clay bricks. Mostly used in wall construction, each interlocking brick is innovatively designed to lock itself to the other bricks around without the use of mortar. Shear-key and lock mechanism is used to achieve the self-locking feature.

Interlocking bricks can be used effectively for walls of residential buildings in areas that are prone to earthquakes and also in areas with hot climates. The roof slab above these walls will keep them structurally stable.  Plastering can be done towards the bottom of the wall above the foundation. This will prevent moisture from seeping up the wall. The locking mechanism of these bricks forms a structurally stable wall that reduces the cost and time of construction to almost half. When construction materials like sand are becoming increasingly scarce and prices of cement are soaring, interlocking bricks come as a much-appreciated alternative to home builders.

Cement Interlocking bricks are made by grinding Laterite Stone which is then filtered using a sieve. The Laterite stone powder is then mixed with a 5% cement mixture and a chemical setting agent. Later on, this mixture is machine compressed to form high-density Cement Interlocking Bricks. Available in varying lengths, each Interlocking Brick has grooves and locks on its sides.

Interlocking bricks cut down the construction costs as cement-sand mortar is not used for construction. These bricks being less heat-intensive, the walls retain coolness inside the house.

Construction with interlocking bricks in Kerala is less labor-intensive and more time-saving. The Interlocking blocks only need to be fitted to each other; instead of conventional cement mortar construction. Also, Interlocking bricks can be salvaged without damage when the house is being dismantled in the future.
